Lex Mex Conference 2018

This year the 6th edition of the Lex Mex Conference 2018, will take place Tuesday 2nd of October at the Bernard's In Hall, Gresham College in London. The MexCC in partnership with The Law Society of England and Wales and the Bar Council will host a Conference event designed to foster closer relations between the English and Mexican legal professions. UK lawyers meet with leading colleagues from Mexico to discuss recent developments, challenges for working in the jurisdiction and opportunities for collaboration between British and Mexican law firms. Lex Mex is an annual event organised by the MexCC to discuss the latest developments in Mexico impacting the legal industry and showcasing opportunities for collaboration between British and Mexican law firms for the benefit of their clients. On this occasion, our guest of honour will be Justice Luis Maria Aguilar Morales - President of the Mexican Supreme Court of Justice. NIGEL MARCUS BAKER OBE MVO Deputy Head of Latin America at the Foreign Office. Nigel is a career diplomat. He joined the Foreign & Commonwealth Office in 1989, and currently holds the position Deputy Director and Head of Latin America Department. He served as HM Ambassador to the Holy See from 2011-16, and HM Ambassador to Bolivia from 2007-11. Previous diplomatic postings include Deputy Head of the British Embassy in Havana, Cuba from 2003-6, and Deputy Head of the British Embassy in Bratislava, Slovakia, from 1993-6. Between 2000 and 2003, Nigel served as a Private Secretary to HRH The Prince of Wales. LORD BRENNAN QC has been a Queen’s Counsel since 1985 and is a Senior Associate Member of Matrix. His areas of expertise include commercial law, public and private international law and international arbitration. Lord Brennan QC, as an appointed life peer, is active in politics as well as dedicating time to his incredibly varied legal practice. His most notable case during 2009 was the landmark civil Omagh bombing case. The outcome, in favour of his clients – relatives of those killed in the Omagh bombing – has become the first civil case of its kind in Europe in which the victims of terrorism were able to sue those responsible. In 2010, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Chambers & Partners Bar Awards. Appointed to the UK House of Lords in 2000, Daniel is a leading international legal practitioner who currently serves on the UK Parliament’s Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy. Daniel is a former Chairman of the Bar Council of England and Wales, President of the British-Spanish Parliamentary Group and President of Canning House, the UK institution driving political, economic and socio-cultural dialogue between the UK and Iberia and Latin America. Following decades of engagement with Iberia and Latin America, Daniel has an extensive commercial, political and legal network across the regions. Daniel has received numerous awards and recognition from domestic and foreign governments and academic institutions. Daniel speaks English, Spanish, French and German. Hon. ALEXANDER BRENNAN, Founder and CEO of Brennan & Partners, Alexander has extensive public and private sector experience in Latin America both as an operator, setting up and growing in-country businesses, and as an investor. Prior to founding Brennan & Partners he was the CEO of a Latin American-focused investment company originating energy and infrastructure projects on behalf of sovereign wealth investors. This role built upon his existing knowledge and network in Latin America developed during his time with De La Rue, where he was responsible for business development and sales throughout the region, transacting business with Latin American governments and organs of state. He began his career at Slaughter and May, where he worked as a corporate lawyer for several years. He has a Master’s degree in History, a Law degree and speaks Spanish, French and Italian. SIMON DAVIS VicePresident of the Law Society 2018-2019 He is is a senior litigator at the London office of Clifford Chance after qualifying in 1984. He joined the firm in 1982 and made partner in 1994. He was the firm’s recruitment partner between 1995 and 2000, and spent a year as president of the London Solicitors’ Litigation Association. He won the 2017 presidential election and will be the first magic circle solicitor to take office since John Wotton, a consultant at Allen & Overy, who served in 2011-12. JOSÉ MARIO DE LA GARZA MARROQUÍN, President of Barra Mexicana de Abogados, Colegio de Abogados and Managing Partner of Bufete de la Garza, S.C. José Mario de la Garza specializes in Corporate Law, in particular for matters related to national and international commercial companies, acquisitions and mergers, and electronic commerce. He has acted in complex bidding processes, including agrarian processes and expropriation proceedings related to concessions for developments in the road sector. He has participated in the negotiation and execution of commercial contracts for a wide range of national and international operations and transactions. He has extensive experience in mediation and arbitration. HECTOR GONZÁLEZ GRAF partner at Marván, González Graf y González Larrazolo Hector was born in Mexico City, Mexico. For the past seven years he has litigated in all areas of employment law in one of Mexico’s most prominent labor law firms, Marvan, Muñoz y Gonzalez Larrazolo, of which he is a partner. He represents national and multi-national companies. Mr. Gonzalez Graf studied law at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico (UNAM), National Autonomous University of Mexico, holds a master’s in law and a PhD from Tulane Law School. In addition to practicing law, Mr. Gonzalez Graf has taught employment law and labor relations courses at various universities and is involved in conferences related to this subject in Mexico and abroad. He has advised Iberoamerican and Latin America alliances on positioning the alliances strategically. Before joining KermaPartners, Leopoldo was the founder and managing partner of HernándezRomano Consultores in Mexico City. From 2002 to 2004 he was the COO for the Mexican office of one the 10 leading law firms in New York being in charge of the finance, administration, human resources and IT areas. He was the administrative liaison between the Mexico and New York offices. Previously he worked for more than twelve years with one of the main cotton trading companies in Latin America in where he served as Secretary of the Board and Commercial Director. Leopoldo earned his Law degree from Panamericana University (UP) campus Mexico City and holds an MBA from Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM). From 1994 to 2012, he lectured at Panamericana University Law School on International Trade, Arbitration and Law firms’ Management. Prior to her judicial role, she prosecuted and defended complex criminal cases. She was also a Senior Prosecuting Trial Attorney at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and was the lead prosecutor in the cases of Prosecutor v. Radoslav Brdjanin & Momir Talic, Prosecutor v. Milomir Stakic. Joanna is a leading advocacy trainer. From 2005-2011, she was Head of International Faculty of Advocacy Training Council (now ICCA). She has organised and taught on numerous advocacy training courses in the UK and internationally. Joanna is also the lead judge on International Judicial Training for the Judicial College. THE HON MRS JUSTICE McGOWEN - High Court Judge in 2014. She sits in the Queen’s Bench Division and is currently a presiding judge on the South Eastern Circuit. She was called to the Bar and practised principally in serious crime though additionally appeared in public inquiries. She took silk in 2001. She is also a member of both the Bar of Ireland and Northern Ireland. She is a Bencher of Middle Temple, chair of the Bench Selection Advisory Committee and a member of the Education and Training Committee. She retains a strong interest in the practice of advocacy and is an Advanced International Advocacy Trainer. She has taught or lectured in many jurisdictions including Hong Kong, Singapore, Mauritius, Cayman Islands, USA, Ireland, Pakistan and South Africa. She is a member of the Sentencing Council of England & Wales and the Sentencing Advisory Committee of the Supreme Court of the Eastern Caribbean. She is a consulting editor of Archbold, on the editorial board of the Criminal Law Review and is a trustee of BAILII. She is a Governor of Goodenough College, London. She was Chairman of the Bar Council of England and Wales in 2013. ADRIAN OJEDA , Vice President of the Mexican Corporate Counsel Association (ANADE) and President elect for years 2019-2020. and managing partner at Ojeda, Ojeda y Asociados. Adrian graduated with honors from Escuela Libre de Derecho law school in Mexico City in 1999, and from Boston University School of Law’s LL.M program in American Law in 2002, obtaining the “Outstanding Achievement Student” award. As managing Partner at Ojeda | Ojeda y Asociados, a Mexican law firm founded in 1968, highly specialized in immigration, corporate, and entertainment law, with offices in Mexico City and Villahermosa, Tabasco. SEBASTIÁN PATIÑO is a partner at Consultores y Abogados en Seguridad Social, S.C. (CASS Abogados), a boutique top tier law firm in Mexico dealing with social security law. For over 33 years, CASS Abogados has been providing specialized legal advice to Mexican and international companies in order to comply with the complex social security regulations. Between 1999 and 2006, Horacio Paredes had a successful carrier in the Mexican Judiciary performing as a Secretary/officer at i) the Mexican Supreme Court of Justice, assisting Justice Juventino V. Castro y Castro; ii) the Second Administrative District Court; and iii) the Seventeenth Administrative Circuit Court.
